Henna (Arabic: حِنَّاء) is a dye prepared from the plant Lawsonia inermis, also known as Hina. The art of henna (called mehndi in Hindi & Urdu) has been practiced for over 5000 years in the Arabian Peninsula, Asian Subcontinent, North Africa and the Middle East. Henna has been used to dye skin and hair, as well as fabrics including silk, wool and leather.
The art of applying elaborate henna patterns on hands and feet is known as Mehndi and it is a very old custom of the Asian subcontinent. Mehndi in Indian tradition is typically applied on special occasions like weddings and festivals like Karva Chauth, Diwali and Teej. In fact, Indian weddings are incomplete without the mehndi ceremony and party.
